Offbeat #19 – Building Something With the Scene

Makthaverskan at Albani and Kochkraft durch KMA at Hafenkneipe. And walking the talk.

We were out and about this past Wednesday. Our photographer, Max Schwarz, captured the tour kickoff by the German post-punk band Kochkraft durch KMA, while I attended Makthaverskan’s refusal to “perform” at Albani Music Club in Winterthur.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes: I sat down with a couple of Winterthur music venues to discuss how we could collaborate to elevate the local music ecosystem. I was relieved by how open the representatives were to a potential collaboration. In this club crisis, it’s time to join forces wherever possible. While I’ve regularly voiced my frustration and called for more action, I’m now walking the talk.

We came up with an initial idea around concert and music discovery that I’m currently prototyping. I’m excited to share more as soon as we move into a trial phase.

Negative White is a labour of passion. If we can support the different actors in the music scene around us, we’re always ready. And it’s our cherished Supporters that enable us to do so. A paid subscription helps us stay independent.

However, Supporters don’t just get bragging rights; there’s also exclusive content like our weekly audio essay, Ghost Notes. Today, I’d like to share an exclusive free taste for all Offbeat readers:

“Sedimento” by Microhm & Imaabs is a mind-bending song that feels like a window into a culture, not a single piece of art. To understand why this particular song haunts me, we need to examine the fabric beneath the sound.

So if you think what Negative White does is important, consider becoming a Supporter yourself. It’s only $30/year, and you can cancel anytime. Thank you!

Please Keep the Reverb On. What does one write about a band that—in the most literal sense of the word—refuses to perform? A band known only to die-hard fans, yet one that has released its fifth album, Glass and Bones, this year. It’s difficult. Almost impossible. Five musicians on stage seem to be somewhere they’d rather not be. The stage almost seems a necessary nuisance that unfortunately comes with the territory. A review of Makthaverskan at the Albani in Winterthur.

A Taste from the Archive: Man of the People by Children Collide

Time to get heavy! The opening track of Time Itself by Australian trio Children Collide rattles and drones like a roaring engine. Introducing: Man of the People. The song starts un-suspicious. The jangly guitar could be part of any indie-rock song, but as the drums pick up steam, you sense Man of the People isn’t your everyday fluffy stuff.
