While Weekly5 is still on its summer break, there’s time for a quick look back at the first half of the year, filled with exceptional songs. And, believe me, it was no easy task to distil a shortlist.
So finally, after many battles and darlings slain, here are my twelve favourites of the year. A mixture of soft, melodic indie folk, rousing anthems, captivating coolness and racy approaches. Let’s revisit these great tunes.
Friend of a Friend – oasis
Dusty, mysterious and evocative, Friend of a Friend drive oasis forwards. Here, the prairie collides with the gloom.
Patrick Wolf – Jupiter
Enchantingly melodious and melt-in-the-mouth, Jupiter shines from the night sky. The chorus is filled with unbreakable hope.
Mary Middlefield – Will you read my mind?
Larger than life and rebellious, this song dances between intimacy and bombast. The guitar sings tenderly and longingly.
